This island nation of 26 small atolls in the Indian Ocean is the 11th most densely populated country in the world with about 400,000 residents. It is also the most low-lying country in the world with an average elevation of only 5 feet above sea level. The nation gained independence from the UK in 1965 and became an Islamic republic in 1968.
Adherence to Sunni Islam is one condition of citizenship. Expatriate Christians are strictly monitored but are allowed to practice their faith in private, behind closed doors. For Maldivian nationals there is no religious freedom. Nonetheless, OpenDoors estimates that a few thousand are Christian.
Some Prayer Points:
- For the completion and dissemination of God’s Word: The highly literate Maldivians do not have the whole New Testament in their main language [Dhivehi]; only portions of certain biblical books are translated. These existing portions are considered contraband.
- For turning to the God who created the oceans: People fear that rising sea levels will wipe out their nation within the next 80 years.
- For Jesus to reveal himself to Muslims in dreams and visions.
